The door turned DIY headboard project is complete! Check out the finished look (and click here for the full tutorial post showing how we made it from a salvaged door)!
Gorgeous right? I have to say it actually turned out better than I expected, I'm sooooo happy with it! Crazy to think it all started with this $40 salvaged door.
My hubby gets major kudos for taking that....
To make a rather snazzy looking headboard if I do say so!
I still can't believe how similar it looks to the Pottery Barn headboard for 1/5th of the price.
Am I right?!?!
That makes it even more exciting!!!
Anyway, my new dilemma is our bedding. I know I wanted all white in the beginning when I mapped out our Master Plan, but I am second guessing it now.
Should we have something with some color to break up the bedding from the headboard?
Do you think the pop of red is still fun as the accent color?
What color or pattern of bedding would you add?
I'm all ears, really let me know what you think. I've been online shopping for bedding for DAYS and I'm getting sick of it. I think some fresh ideas or advice would be awwwwwesome :)
It's gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteCarla, yours looks BETTER than Pottery Barn! Seriously gorgeous!! And I love the white bedding, but I'm a huge fan of all white bedding. I especially love all white bedding with dark wall colors because then there isn't so much competing with color. Does that make sense? Love the red accent color idea!
ReplyDeleteWith the color combo you already have put together, I (personally) wouldn't choose red as the accent pop of color. I would go with a color similar to that of vintage jadeite dishes (some of my faves!)... its bright, yet calming and unexpected and it will mesh beautifully with your golden tones (without clashing with your blues and white).
ReplyDeleteI really like what that touch of greenery adds to the Pottery Barn bedroom. Maybe you could start with something there, and then see how you feel about color. But a nice print on a duvet or quilt could be a great accent piece too. If you don't want all over pattern on the top of bed, you could just drape a quilt/coverlet over the foot.

ReplyDeleteFabulous headboard. I am pinning this because I snagged 2 of these 5 panel doors a couple of months ago ($10 each!!) and have been waiting for a good tutorial for making a headboard out of one! Now all I need is a free weekend and some enthusiasm from my husband. LOL. Thanks so much for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteFor a strong contrast you could do yellow, red or orange pillows. Or for a more subtle contrast how about various shades of blues with different/complimentary prints? It looks great like it is, though.
Angie
Hmmmm, I'm liking the shades of blue idea maybe??? Awesome score with the doors! I'll have to check our what you do with them!
DeleteI don't know what is better-how it turned out or the cost savings? Y'all rocked that project!
ReplyDeleteHey the door headboard Idea is awesome, I had wanted to do that forever and still have not gotten around to it, one day I think i am going to use mine in a nursery for a pallate bed idea i got from ashleyannphotography.com. As far as the color for your room, I would keep to the gold white and blues, just add patterned pillows and a throw. The ottoman being red though is a nice pop! Love your bedroom!
ReplyDeleteI think you should stick with the all white bedding but just throw in a coloured/printed pillow in there! Or even a white pillow with red piping for a subtle contrast :)
ReplyDeleteOooo, yes, just the pop from piping or a trim would be good! Thanks for the idea, I really think now I might just need to add the right accent pillow and a throw?
DeleteMy vote is for colored accent pillows, just something to make your white bedding and headboard "pop"....something in red or gold like the picture you show????
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments so far! I guess I am getting convinced now that all I need is the right accent pillows, or Euro pillows, and a decorative throw at the end of the bed. That seems easier now than all new bedding... I'm on the search again!
ReplyDeleteI like the white bedding, how about breaking it up with more red accents like what you have posted and maybe red Euro Shams between the headboard and standard pillows.
ReplyDeletethe headboard looks great!!!
Hi-- I just pinned your headboard! Love it-- a door, but not too "door". Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt appears that you left out a few steps. I guess this isn't a tutorial after all...
ReplyDeleteHi Kathryn, you are right because this post actually isn't the tutorial, here is the link to the full tutorial and I will update this post to show the link as well- good call! http://hammersandhighheels.blogspot.com/2012/04/our-salvaged-door-turned-diy-headboard.html
DeleteThank you so very much, Carla. I'm a bit frustrated by other blogs that showed points A and Z but precious little in between and sometimes it makes all the difference! The shot of the wooden box above the smaller end caps was what confused me most, but invisible joinery was a sticking point, too! Thankful as I am for you putting up all the shots I need, I think I'll be a regular reader! PS My degree is in Design from Drexel U. and my background is in retailing, plus a ton of DIY. I recognize probably way too much... Btw, have you ever tried upholstery? I know your time is limited, but I think you will find that the possibilities it opens, along with creative rewards will be beyond your imaginings
