Vestibule Project Planning

It's time to gear up for our next project!
Alex and I are going to take our little Vestibule space and turn it into something a bit more purposeful.
Yep it is a really small space measuring just 4' x 4', but a few of you gave me some really great ideas for this space when I first wrote about it back in April.  One idea we never even thought of was doing something with the ceiling- either painting it or making it mirrored.  Still unsure if we will go that route, but I'm totally intrigued!  As of now....

Here's What We're Planning On
I know we are challenged by how small the space is, but I liked the idea of adding a mirror or small narrow shelf that attached to the wall kind of like these...

We also thought adding some kind of detail to the walls would be a nice update, either with woodwork like the photo below on the left or simple printed wallpaper shown on the right.I'm kind of scared or wallpaper though (bad past experiences). I just think we need to add some kind of texture or color to the space.

Now I know this might impossible, but how fantastic are these vintage-inspired coat racks that sit flush to a wall?  They even have an umbrella rack, ugh so cute!

But, I might still go with the hooks and chained mirror I picked up at Bachman's.  These might be the best bet to fit in the space if a rack or shelf won't.
 Lastly, lighting!!!
We know that this is a must, we HAVE to add a hanging pendant light and I love the look of these vintage styles.  This alone will add a lot to the little space!

Wall update, wall mirror and/or hooks, and lighting fixture, got that?  Had to write that for myself really :)
Hopefully those additions will be just what we need to add some style and purpose to this little space!

Also, in case anyone is wondering I should mention that we are not going to replace our front door or the floor tiles.  The tile flooring is original to the home dating back to 1924 and I would never change it- not just because it is original, I also love the authentic vintage color and design!  For the front door, someday we will replace it with something that has glass so light can come in, but a new door will not be part of our project now (even though I wish it was).
What do you think of our ideas?

Do you have any other ideas or fun suggestions for our Vestibule?

  1. I like the stuff that you picked up at Bachmanns (sp?!), as the black ties in with a few other details around the vestibule. Cute. And I would really encourage some sort of shelf or table- we have the same vestibule, though we life in PA, and it has been a great drop-spot for keys, mail, etc. Also, we have a little basket type thing for dropping bills, etc. VERY helpful!

I just love your house and style, and can't wait to see what you come up with... so I can steal some ideas!! :)

    1. Yes, I agree that we need something to set keys and mail on. I really want coat hooks but I hope it won't look messy if we have guests and they use the hooks- but that is what it's for right? We just got start on it over the weekend, stay tuned!

  2. Hi,
First let me say I love your blog...it's so much fun..

The highlight in your vestibule is the flooring..it is beautiful and I would like to enhance it somehow...I also noticed you like terracotta, blacks and greys plus neutrals from what I could see from the other rooms...

I would love to see all of the trim stripped down to the wood but since that may not be possible I would use a pale shade of grey for the trim....I would paint the interior of the front door black...and the vestibule side of the glass-paned door a color that blends with the flooring and the terracotta wall color in the adjoining room...what a fun pop of color that would be! I would paint the ceiling a light cream rather than using a stark white. I prefer the second pendant light you have pictured..it's a classic and does not take up as much visual space as the other 2 pictured.

I would modpodge old book pages, maps, newspapers & even sheet music to the walls..it will add depth (and history)to the space without taking up any room and because the vestibule is square I would replace the rug with something that has round patterns or an oval and incorporates greys, blacks, creams and reddish terracottas.

You definitely need the mirror and I would hang it from an interesting hook. I agree a small shelf would be useful to drop your keys on..that can be anything you want it to be..a nice piece of old wood on wrought iron brackets would be great but I would avoid anything flashy..keep it simple...I would add a narrow wire basket or similar object to the wall for mail as Julie suggested.

On the opposite wall I would add one of your rows of hooks at chair rail height and would hang a few burlap homemade bags with burlap "ribbon" from them... to use for gloves, warm hats and scarves or just what you need for the next day...might be fun to stencil your house numbers on them. I would hang family photos in assorted sizes in black or oil-rubbed bronze frames above. The only piece that I would add that touches the floor would be an umbrella stand.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do...I know it will be great !! Jeanine
